Summerside Airport is located just outside of the city, about 6.5 km from city
limits. The airport was originally a military field, first RCAF Station
Summerside, then CFB Summerside. During World War II, the field hosted two
training schools for aircrews in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan:
first No. 9 Service Flying Training School using the North American
Harvard advanced trainer (the school later moved to RCAF Station Centralia),
then No. 1 General Reconnaissance School using the Avro Anson. |
